Motorola launches Moto G6 and Moto E5 families

Motorola has launched updated generations of its popular, and top selling mid- and entry level smartphone ranges, the new G6 and E5 series phones. You will find these are offered at MSRPs of between €299 at the top end, down to sub-€100. All the new smartphones are “not last year’s models at cheaper prices,” Says Motorola. Rather they are affordable modern phones that push the value boundaries with a “focus on display, design and power”. Taller screens seem to be the dish of the day. Other common features are the reliance on Qualcomm processors, new ‘AI experiences’, and Android Oreo.

Moto G6

The new standard from Motorola is built around a 5.7-inch Full HD Max Vision display. A 3D glass back gives it a premium feel, as does its smooth shape. Smartphone photography is very popular with the masses and this new mobile includes dual rear cameras (12MP and 5MP). Advanced imaging software provides portrait, mono, and face filtered modes.

For fast unlock and good security the G6 includes a front mounted fingerprint reader, built into the home button, and you can use Face Unlock. Inside you will find a Snapdragon 450 processor, and options for 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage or 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage (plus up to 128GB microSD). There is an ‘all-day’ 3000mAh battery which you charge via USB-C.

Starting from $249, the Moto G6 is available in Brazil now, with Mexico to follow next week, followed by a worldwide rollout over coming months.

Moto G6 Plus

This new smartphone majors on expansive screen plus camera ability. Motorola has equipped a 5.9-inch, 18:9 aspect ratio, Full HD Max Vision display said to offer vivid colours and fine details.

The Moto G6 Plus camera system is another highlight with its fast focusing Dual Autofocus Pixel technology, large f/1.7 aperture and 1.4um pixel size. AI smarts get applied here for auto-recognising scenes, applications and objects.

Fingerprint reader and Face Unlock are present. Inside you will find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor, 4 or 6GB of RAM and 64GB of built-in storage which you can expand with a microSD card. Motorola has specced a 3200mAh battery which you charge via the USB Type-C port.

Starting from €299 EUR, the Moto G6 Plus is available in Brazil now, with Mexico to follow next week, followed by a worldwide rollout over coming months.

Moto G6 Play

The Moto G6 Play majors on battery life. It has a 5.7-inch screen dubbed an edge-to-edge 5.7″ HD+ Max Vision display. Yes, it is 720p, but it is an 18:9 ratio screen. The Play only has a single back camera, at 13MP. The front camera is 5MP but is accompanied with an LED flash.

Inside is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 427 processor. Memory is 2GB RAM / 16GB storage or 3GB RAM / 32GB storage. Users can fit a microSD card. A fingerprint reader is present.

As mentioned in the intro the star of this show is a 4000mAh battery. Motorola claims this provides up to 36 hours battery life. However it uses the older style micro-USB port for charging.

Moto E- models

Motorola has also launched three new E- models. The big new Moto E5 Plus (from €169 EUR, and pictured above) offers a 6-inch 18:9 max vision screen plus 5000mAh battery, and includes a fingerprint reader. Motorola’s Moto E5 (€149 EUR) opts for a 5.7-inch screen includes a hidden fingerprint reader and microSD card slot. Last but not least the Moto E5 Play is built around a 5.2-inch display, and includes an 8MP rear camera, water repellent coating, and microSD card slot. The Play doesn’t have a particularly large battery, at 2,800mAh, but it is removable.
